With Sen. J.D. Vance set to become Vice President next year, Ohioans will need someone else to fill their Senate seat.
Initially, the Ohio governor will nominate someone to fill the hole left by Vance's vacancy. Pursuant to Ohio law, a special election will then be held to fill the remainder of Vance's term in the Senate.
“The appointee shall remain in office until December 15 after the next regular state election held not less than 180 days after the vacancy occurs.'' ohio law state.

“At the next regular state election, a special election to fill the vacancy shall be held; provided, however, that if an unexpired term ends within one year immediately after the date of such regular state election; “No election shall be held to fill the term of office of any person, and his appointment shall be for an indefinite term,'' provides Ohio law.
The seat should remain in Republican hands, as Ohio's current governor, Republican Mike DeWine, is expected to select Vance's interim replacement.
The special election is expected to be held in November 2026, according to the. cincinnati.com.

Mr. Vance will take office in 2023, and his term in the Senate is scheduled to end in early 2029.
In his victory remarks, Vance said, “After the greatest political resurgence in American history, we will, under the leadership of Donald Trump, lead the greatest economic resurgence in American history.”
Earlier this year, entrepreneur and author Vivek Ramaswamy told Fox News Digital that he would consider running for a Senate seat if asked.

Ramaswamy entered the race for the Republican presidential nomination in 2023, but dropped out in early 2024 to support Trump.
