The New York Police Department (NYPD) on Tuesday released body camera footage of an officer who was allegedly shot by migrants, the New York Post reported.

“I was at the hospital last night and I saw the body camera footage. [the footage] “It sent chills through my body,” NYPD Deputy Commissioner Kaz Daughtry said in an interview with WPIX-TV, according to the New York Post.
The video shows Iarrusso, who was shot in the chest but protected by a bulletproof vest, quickly applying a tourniquet to Abreu, who was shot in the leg. The New York Post reported that the footage highlights the nature of the incident and the officers’ quick response under pressure. Daughtry highlighted the officers’ bravery. “After being shot in the chest, he immediately distracted himself, instructed his teammates to apply a tourniquet to his partner and instructed other teammates to handcuff him. [Mata]”That’s heroic,” Daughtry added, the New York Post reported.
The suspect, Mata, was arrested at the scene and remains hospitalized after being shot in the ankle during the incident. He entered the country illegally through Texas in July 2023 and sought asylum, but his request was denied on May 6 as part of an effort to clear the court backlog, according to the New York Post. The two injured officers were treated at a local hospital and subsequently released.
