Hershey’s Efforts to Attract Health-Conscious Consumers

Hershey’s is branching out to appeal to those mindful of their health, rolling out a new protein powder set to debut in January. This initiative comes as the long-standing candy company grapples with changing consumer preferences.

Having recently seen its shares drop to a 52-week low, Hershey’s CEO, Kirk Tanner, has been engaging in direct conversations with consumers about the impact of weight loss medications on snacking behaviors.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Tanner noted, “They still love the products they love. They’re just eating less of them.” It seems, with nearly 30% of obese adults in the US projected to be using appetite-suppressing GLP-1 drugs by 2035, the company is keen to adapt and innovate.

He also acknowledged the competition from rival Mars, indicating that today’s market demands fresh ideas and products, something Mars seems to be delivering well.

Tanner’s ambition for Hershey’s could find a significant boost with its entrance into the protein powder sector. This venture is being developed in partnership with VitaKey, although specific details are still under wraps.

Since taking the helm at Hershey, Tanner has increased the research and development budget by 25%, aiming to generate creative ideas for the brand. The company is also expanding its gum and mints line to cater to consumers experiencing “Ozempic breath,” a side effect associated with the weight loss drug. Sales of gum at Hershey saw an 8% rise earlier this year.

In addition to its chocolate products, Hershey’s—known for brands like Skinny Pop and Pirate’s Booty—is seeking to enhance its savory snack offerings and is working on packaging that controls portion sizes.

The protein snack bar market is on the rise, expected to grow from $21.94 billion to $32.66 billion by 2031, reflecting an 8.2% annual growth. This year, Rxbar, famous for its popular protein bars, achieved a valuation of $2.25 billion, marking a significant deal in the industry.

Weight loss drugs like GLP-1s have created challenges across the food industry. For instance, food giant Conagra has been analyzing consumer spending patterns, social media mentions, and dining habits to understand current consumer food preferences.
