Heavy artillery fire has been exchanged between Israel and the militant group Hezbollah as conflict in the region escalates.
“Dozens of rockets struck Israel, destroying homes, vehicles and communities,” IDF spokesman Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani said. X said in his post.
Israel said almost 150 rockets, cruise missiles and drones were fired at Israel, with many being intercepted but “a small number” of hits penetrating. NBC News reported.
Shoshani blamed Hezbollah for the attack. And as I said earlier Israel announced on Saturday that it had “eliminated” 16 Hezbollah leaders.
The attack comes following an increase in attacks between the two groups.
Last weekend, mobile phones used by Hezbollah members exploded across Lebanon and in parts of Syria in what were widely seen as Israeli attacks.
The coordinated attack raised fears of a wider regional war as Israel continues to fight Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
Israel has increasingly signaled it is ready for a larger war against Hezbollah as its operation in Gaza winds down.
Hezbollah said it had fired dozens of missiles at an airbase southeast of Haifa in retaliation for the pager attack and the Israeli attack.
Israel said on Sunday that 10 projectiles had entered Israel from Lebanon. An Israeli attack this weekend killed Hezbollah's head of operations, Ibrahim Akil.
Shoshani told X-TV that Aqil made up the group's leadership along with 11 other slain Hezbollah leaders and was “pursuing terror attacks” similar to the one Hamas carried out against Israel on October 7 last year.
“These murderous terrorists had blood on their hands and were a threat to both Israeli and Lebanese civilians,” Shoshani posted.
As international leaders try to get Israel and Hamas to agree to a ceasefire, Hezbollah has massed across the border, posing a significant external security threat.
