Cyclospora Outbreak Under Control, HHS Secretary Says
Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced on Tuesday that federal authorities have managed to bring a Cyclospora outbreak affecting several states “under control.” He mentioned that investigators have figured out what’s causing the illness and have initiated a recall, even as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is still tracing the precise source of the contamination.
“We are firmly controlling the spread of infection,” Kennedy stated during a briefing on medical fraud. “Extensive forensic and epidemiological work helped us identify the source of the outbreak. Both we and the involved companies have implemented a recall.”
His remarks came shortly after the FDA reported initial tests indicated that lettuce samples from Taylor Farms tested positive for Cyclospora. However, further analysis revealed that these were likely false positives.
The FDA continues to investigate and collect samples. Investigators have pinpointed Taylor Farms de Mexico as the supplier of the shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell, which is tied to the outbreak. Despite this, authorities noted they have not identified any positive results for the parasite from the product samples under scrutiny.
White House Response to Health Crisis
Taylor Fresh Foods stated that the FDA informed them on July 17 of a voluntary recall for iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico after discovering errors in initial test results. This product was linked to Taco Bell locations where many individuals reported illness.
The recall applies exclusively to iceberg lettuce from central Mexico and does not include any Taylor Farms-branded salad products available in stores.
So far, the outbreak has affected 1,644 individuals and led to 94 hospitalizations across Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia. Investigators continue to search for the contaminated food responsible for the cases.
Cyclospora infections are typically associated with fresh produce like leafy greens, herbs, and berries, but, intriguingly, no contaminated products have been identified in the current investigation.
Cyclospora is a parasite that leads to symptoms such as prolonged diarrhea, abdominal pain, fatigue, and nausea. Some patients may even require hospitalization, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Kennedy faced some critical questions regarding the government’s response, particularly when a reporter asked if cuts to the foodborne illness surveillance network, known as FoodNet, have hampered their capacity to investigate outbreaks. He responded by highlighting that they’ve reduced the program to eliminate redundant oversight, insisting that each state remains engaged in forensic work.
“We’ve cut back on the FoodNet program, but it’s because of redundant oversight,” Kennedy asserted. “We’re still conducting surveillance operations across the nation, and I think the criticism of our response is invalid.”
