High school coach and groundskeeper in Long Beach charged with sex crimes

Charges Filed Against California High School Coach

Prosecutors have charged a baseball coach and groundskeeper from a California high school with sexual offenses involving a female student. Gabriel Vigil, 34, was employed at Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo High School in Long Beach, where the alleged crimes occurred, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Vigil faces a felony charge for sexual penetration of minors under 18, as well as charges related to illegal sexual activity with minors over 14, and exhibiting pornography to minors. He was also charged with two felonies involving catering to minors with indecent intentions. He pleaded not guilty during his court appearance on Monday, where bail was set at $250,000.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman stated, “It’s crucial to recognize that any misuse of trust in a school setting will be met with full accountability.” He emphasized the office’s support for the victim and the pursuit of justice. Allegations against Vigil include multiple sexual offenses against female students across various locations, including his own apartment.

Additional Charges Against an Illinois Teacher

In another related case, an Illinois teacher has been slapped with 52 new charges in connection with student sexual abuse allegations. Details about this case suggest a deeply troubling pattern of behavior.

A representative from the Long Beach Unified School District confirmed that Vigil is no longer part of the district. They stated that incidents involving Vigil, who served as both a coach and groundskeeper, are currently under investigation. The district is prioritizing the safety of students and plans to address any concerns according to their protocols once everything is thoroughly investigated.

Prosecutors are urging anyone who may have been affected or witnessed something to contact the Long Beach Police Department, as they believe there may be more victims.
