Graduation Chaos in Virginia

A high school graduation in Virginia turned chaotic when spectators charged the stage and confronted students as they were about to receive their diplomas.

On Thursday, a 20-year-old named Evan J. Williams Jr. was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and criminal damage during the graduation event at Virginia Commonwealth University’s John Marshall High School, as noted by the police.

A brief 12-second video surfaced on Facebook, showing the escalation of the violence just before 11 a.m. at the Siegel Center, leaving families stunned as they witnessed the disruption.

University police quickly intervened, with at least four officers rushing to the stage to break up the clash. In the chaos, other attendees either joined the scuffle or attempted to halt it.

Outside the Siegel Center, several more altercations occurred while police were busy managing the initial fight and clearing the area.

Fortunately, authorities reported no injuries or use of weapons during the incident.

According to VCU Police Maj. Nicole Daly, over 50 officers from both her department and the Richmond Police Department were dispatched to restore order so the graduation ceremony could proceed. Three other individuals were also arrested amidst the disturbance.

Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards mentioned that officers were placed strategically in the parking deck to ensure that everyone could exit safely, expressing a desire to prevent any retaliatory actions.

Authorities are currently reviewing security footage to ascertain the details leading to the brawl and considering additional charges for Williams and others involved.

The Richmond Public Schools Superintendent, Jason Kamras, strongly denounced the actions that marred the event and asserted that such violence will not be tolerated. He urged attendees to keep any grievances at home and emphasized the importance of celebrating the achievements of the graduating students.

Kamras also commended the swift police response and indicated that enhanced security measures would be implemented for future graduations at Richmond High School of the Arts and Richmond Success Academy. He urged the community to respect the graduates’ special day, especially given that John Marshall University celebrated a remarkable 100% graduation rate this year.
