Australian Teacher Pleads Guilty to Sexual Abuse Charges

An Australian high school teacher has reportedly admitted guilt in a New South Wales court, facing charges of sexually abusing a teenage boy multiple times near Newcastle.

Carly Rae, 37, who became a mother only eight weeks ago, changed her plea to guilty in October 2024. She was charged with engaging in sexual relations with a 15-year-old boy, possessing child abuse materials, grooming a child for illegal sexual activity, and attempting to obstruct justice.

Initially, Rae had pleaded not guilty back in May, but she shifted her stance just last month.

Her attorney, Mark Ramsland, requested that the court consider her case a priority due to her having her infant with her during proceedings.

Court documents revealed that Rae and the boy communicated through social media, and the alleged incidents took place in the suburbs of Bolton Point, Merewether, and Belmont.

Evidence from the police included conversations between Rae and the boy on platforms like Snapchat and Instagram, where she expressed regret for removing him from her friend list, citing it was “too appealing” for her at the moment.

When the boy suggested they delete each other, Rae took full responsibility and said, “Do what you want and need.”

She reportedly also proposed a final meeting before school resumed, implying a casual visit with some toys.

The situation came to light when the boy’s cousin found their exchanges on Instagram and informed his parents, who then contacted the police.

Upon her arrest, Rae claimed ignorance regarding the boy’s age, stating she thought he was an adult who had completed school.

Ray was granted bail in June after revealing her pregnancy to the court, although a previous bail request had been denied. A trial originally set for August 2025 has now been canceled.

Judge Roy Ellis scheduled a sentencing hearing for March 25, allowing two and a half hours for the proceedings and mandating a sentencing evaluation report in advance.

Ramsland mentioned that this report would likely incorporate a considerable degree of subjectivity.

Interestingly, records show that Rae completed child protection training in February 2024, raising questions about her awareness prior to these incidents.

She remains out on bail while awaiting her sentencing.
