Georgia Teacher Accused of Child Sexual Crimes

A teacher from Georgia faces serious allegations concerning child sex crimes involving six teenagers, as multiple reports have indicated.

Maris Nichols, a 25-year-old biology teacher at Alexander High School in Douglas County, was taken into custody on May 8.

“The alleged conduct is unacceptable and violates the professional standards expected of all employees,” a statement emphasized.

Nichols was charged with several counts of child sexual abuse, inappropriate sexual contact with a minor, grooming a minor for sexual offenses, and tampering with evidence just last week.

The judge has set her bail at $74,000. Moreover, Nichols is under house arrest, allowed only to attend medical appointments, religious services, and legal consultations. She is also required to wear an ankle monitor, undergo a psychiatric evaluation, and maintain no contact with unrelated minors while being barred from the school.

According to an arrest warrant obtained by authorities, Nichols allegedly engaged in sexual acts with a student inside a closet adjacent to the classroom on April 23, between 3:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. Further accusations note that she had sex with the student in a Hummer off campus as well.

Investigators claim that Nichols sent explicit photos and videos to various students, including a live video chat in which she performed sexual acts with a toy while at least two children under 16 viewed it.

The warrant also mentions another instance where she had sexual contact with a different student in the back of a truck at a golf club. Nichols reportedly sent explicit messages to two male students outlining sexual acts she wanted to perform.

Allegations also surfaced regarding another student who received a video showing nudity from Nichols, who purportedly recommended they watch “Fifty Shades of Grey” and then queried about the content of the film.

Moreover, it’s suggested that Nichols instructed one of the teens to delete messages they’d exchanged concerning sexual topics.

The Douglas County School System expressed being “deeply troubled” by these allegations in a letter to parents, stating they had initiated an internal investigation after becoming aware of the alleged misconduct. The institution is cooperating with both state and local law enforcement in their inquiries.

“The alleged conduct is unacceptable and violates the professional standards expected of all employees,” the letter reiterated, though it did not provide additional details about the situation.

Officials have not confirmed if any disciplinary actions were taken against Nichols, nor whether she has been terminated from her employment. As of Wednesday, her name was absent from the personnel list of the high school.

During Nichols’ bail hearing earlier this month, her attorney characterized the situation as “unfortunate,” claiming she has been a reputable member of the community without any previous legal issues.

Her attorney, Christy Draper, stated, “The truth will eventually be revealed. This case is more nuanced and intricate than it appears.” In contrast, a prosecuting attorney labeled the defense’s claims as “egregious.”

The arrest warrant does not detail the victims’ specific ages; it only mentions that they are all teenagers. Nichols was hired as a teacher at Alexander High School in May 2023 and also held the position of “Director of Player Personnel” for the high school’s football program.

As of now, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office hasn’t responded to requests for comments on this matter.
