Cancel Culture Continues in Washington Schools

Even though former President Joe Biden and his team have left office, the effects of cancel culture remain palpable, particularly in Washington.

A case that illustrates this is that of Matthew Mastronaldi, a Spanish teacher who faced backlash for referencing a passage containing a racial slur from “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

Mastronaldi emphasized the need for context when discussing the book, saying, “You need someone special to understand the context, and that’s what you really need to understand this story.” He shared this during an interview with a host named Sarah Gonzalez.

On April 17th, while observing students as they worked on individual projects, Mastronaldi overheard two girls discussing the same novel, assigned in their English classes.

He reflected, “I just thought, ‘That’s ridiculous.’ You’re required to read these books, yet told to skip certain words; I think it’s going to distance you from what you’re supposed to feel.” His disagreement prompted further discussion among the students.

Then, one student asked him directly, “If you were reading a book, would you say the words?” Mastronaldi chuckled before responding, “Of course, if I was reading from the book, I would read every word.”

He felt it was his duty to present the material honestly to his students. However, his lesson was secretly recorded, and soon after, he found himself facing potential job loss. “I was accused of acting unprofessionally,” he mentioned. “I thought it was done, that I could just move on, but things have only escalated.” Now, he’s waiting on a final appeal regarding his position.

He’s hoping for the best outcome and has asked for prayers during this challenging time.
