High School Yearbook Challenges AOC’s ‘Bronx Girl’ Claim

Ocasio-Cortez Under Fire Over Bronx Claims

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has faced criticism regarding her claims of being a “Bronx girl.” This controversy intensified this week when Matt Slater (R-NY) shared a yearbook photo of her from Yorktown High School, questioning her assertions about her upbringing.

Slater remarked on social media, “If you’re a BX girl, why are you in my Yorktown yearbook?” He included an image of the 2004 yearbook featuring Ocasio-Cortez, who was a freshman at the time.

Ocasio-Cortez’s family moved from the Bronx when she was around 4 or 5 years old. She grew up in Yorktown Heights, which is about an hour away from the Bronx and was, according to the 2000 Census, a predominantly white area with a median family income of $138,000.

After graduating in 2011, she attended Boston University. Seventeen years following her family’s departure, Ocasio-Cortez returned to the Bronx to work as a bartender and later pursued a career in politics.

The exchange between Ocasio-Cortez and Slater came after President Trump labeled her one of the “dumbest people in Congress,” criticizing her proposals to defund certain initiatives.

Ocasio-Cortez responded, saying, “President, don’t take your anger out on me—I’m just a stupid girl.”

She later added, “I’m a Bronx girl. I’ve got to show that I can take on anyone.” This kind of bravado is interesting, though, as some might view it as a facade.

Reflecting on her upbringing, someone noted, “I grew up in a suburban area, too, and when asked where I’m from, I tend to mention that place. I think it’s important to be genuine about one’s background.” This sentiment resonates, especially as Ocasio-Cortez has been perceived as somewhat disconnected from her claims of being from the Bronx when, in reality, she was more of a suburbanite.

The danger for politicians lies in inauthenticity. It’s a lesson learned by many, including figures like Mitt Romney and Hillary Clinton. While Trump has found success by remaining true to himself, Ocasio-Cortez’s ambitious nature raises questions about how her narrative might impact her future.

People can’t forget that she grew up in Yorktown Heights, yet she has portrayed an image as if she is unfamiliar with certain basic life experiences. It’s a bit perplexing, to be honest.
