A premium high chair has been recalled due to reports of serious safety issues, including injuries that could be fatal, as noted by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
The recall was prompted by several parents who reported that the Bugaboo Giraffe High Chair led to serious falls. It seems that the screws securing the chair’s legs tend to become loose over time.
In one Reddit post titled “Unsafe Scam Disguised as a Premium Product,” a parent shared their alarming experience after two years of use, stating, “I went to pick up a high chair to move it – and it collapsed. It just fell apart in my hands. I was furious. It was supposed to be a safe, durable premium product.”
Complaints also highlighted the frustrating customer service process, which reportedly involved long wait times and repeated hang-ups.
Parents who own the chair are urged to stop using it and to reach out to Bugaboo for a free repair kit, although refunds are not being offered at this time.
Bugaboo emphasized its commitment to safety, stating, “We have developed a free repair kit to reduce the chances of incorrect installation of screws.” This kit includes:
- A redesigned set of screws.
- Improved Allen keys for easier installation.
- A step-by-step instruction manual.
Bugaboo also noted that anyone purchasing a Giraffe after May 1, 2025, will receive a repair kit automatically.
The decision to recall the product followed a consumer report urging the CPSC to investigate the situation further.
Gabe Knight, a senior policy analyst at Consumer Report, expressed mixed feelings: “We’re happy to see the product being recalled, but it’s unacceptable that Bugaboo doesn’t offer a refund to consumers who want one. If a baby is injured after falling from this high chair, parents may not feel comfortable using it again.”
As it stands, approximately 18,280 of these high chairs have been recalled in the U.S., with another 2,325 in Canada.
