Eight firefighters were injured in a serious crash involving a fire truck on a Southern California highway Thursday, authorities said.
Orange County Fire Chief Brian Fennessy said the truck overturned on State Highway 241 just north of Portola Hills.
The vehicle was transporting ground crews who had been working for 12 hours to fight a massive wildfire in Orange County, dubbed the “Airport Fire.”
Fennessy said a ladder in the road caused the truck to swerve, strike a guardrail and overturn.
At least one firefighter was transported by helicopter and others were taken to hospital by ambulance.
“All firefighters involved are currently undergoing a formal major accident stress debriefing at headquarters,” Mr Fennessy said. “You can only imagine how devastating it must be for their fellow firefighters to see them injured like this on the highway.”
