Hiker Recovering After Grizzly Bear Attack
A hiker in Glacier National Park is on the mend following a harrowing encounter with a grizzly bear. After undergoing several surgeries due to the attack, he now faces the burden of rising medical expenses.
The incident took place on May 28 along the Grinnell Glacier Trail, a favorite among hikers, as detailed on a fundraising page set up after the event.
Daniel Crago, the hiker involved, recounted that he and a friend had stopped briefly in a snow-covered area to take in the scenic view and snap some pictures. Just moments later, while turning back, he spotted a small grizzly in the vicinity.
As Crago glanced around, he suddenly saw a large grizzly bear only about four feet away. Despite his attempts to make his presence known, the bear reacted by lunging at him.
“As soon as he saw me, he lunged and attacked me,” Crago described on his GoFundMe page.
The bear bit Crago’s arm and managed to drag him 20 to 30 feet before retreating. As a result, he sustained serious injuries that required immediate medical attention.
Fortunately, several hikers who were nearby stepped in to help. Among them was a pediatric emergency room doctor who stabilized Crago’s arm and controlled the bleeding. Another passerby made noise to deter the bear from returning while yet another used a satellite device to call for emergency services.
Crago was transported by helicopter to a hospital, where he has since had three surgeries, with at least one more anticipated as part of his recovery. He expressed his shock at the mounting medical bills from his treatment and ongoing care.
The GoFundMe campaign was initiated to assist him financially during this challenging time. “I am deeply grateful to everyone who has supported me,” Crago expressed.
In addition to covering his medical costs, he stated that any extra funds raised would be donated to the National Park Service.
According to the National Park Service, Glacier National Park is home to roughly 300 grizzly bears alongside around 600 black bears, making for a total bear population that ranges from approximately 900 to 1,000 bears.
