Hillary Clinton joined her co-hosts on “The View” on Thursday to say that when she saw Melania Trump at Rosalynn Carter's funeral, she saw her as a “child” outside a birthday party and worried about whether she would be “accepted.”

Recounting seeing Trump at Carter's funeral, Clinton said she never expected she would be there. The former secretary of state wrote in her new memoir that Carter's grandson had asked all first ladies to attend the memorial “as a show of unity in these divisive times.”

“I saw Laura Bush talking with Melania Trump. She's such an incredible woman and nobody knew she was there. Michelle, Jill Biden and I thought, Wow, no one told us. But right away, you know, we're trained and we're polite and we all quickly came up to her and Michelle gave her a hug and Jill said she was so happy to meet her and I said hello to her and I wrote that I thought it was a very positive thing that she was there,” Clinton said.

Co-host Sunny Hostin said it must have been “scary” for Trump.

“I think it was a little scary. She looked like a kid outside a birthday party. I wondered, am I accepted? Should I even be here?” Clinton said.

Her co-hosts on “The View” also praised Melania for attending the event.

In his new book, “Something Lost, Something Gained,” Clinton says he had a similar experience with Melania Trump.

“Melania's expression, smiling but anxious, reminded me of a stranger at a birthday party, a little kid waiting at the edge of the circle hoping people will be nice to her,” Clinton wrote, according to the report.

“I understand how awkward this must have been,” Clinton wrote.

Clinton said Jason Carter's description of first ladies as a “sisterhood of presidents' ladies” prompted her to reflect on her own experience as first lady.

Melania is also set to release a new memoir about her experiences as first lady, which she describes as her “perspective” and “truth”.

“As a private citizen who has often been the subject of intense public scrutiny and misunderstanding, I feel a responsibility to set the facts straight. I believe it is important to share my perspective — the truth,” she said in a trailer promoting the memoir in social media posts.
