Hillary Clinton on Graham Platner’s Senate Candidacy
On Monday, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton did not commit to supporting Graham Platner, the Democratic candidate for Senate in Maine, when asked about her stance.
“I feel the same way about him as I feel about any other candidate,” she remarked during an event at 92NY. “I want to see what kind of candidate he will actually be.”
While addressing his ongoing scandals, Clinton referred to them as a “difficulty” in assessing his character. “Some of the challenges he’s had along the way and some of the things he’s said…” she observed.
New Yorker editor David Remnick probed further, asking, “Are there any bumps in the road?”
Clinton admitted, “Yeah, he’s obviously lost his way with some of the things he’s done and said in the past. And I’ll tell you, I worked with him.” She added that defeating [Maine Sen.] Susan Collins would be quite challenging, which led her to express caution about her support.
“But if you were the main person, where would you pull the lever?” Remnick pressed.
In a light-hearted manner, Clinton replied, “I’m not a Maine person. I’m a New Yorker.”
She then shifted her focus to the critical importance of Democrats regaining the House majority by 2026.
Platner’s campaign has not yet responded to inquiries regarding Clinton’s comments.
Since launching his campaign, Platner has faced a plethora of controversies, including sexually explicit messages sent to various women, offensive social media posts, and even a tattoo linked to Nazi imagery. Recently, a report from the New York Times brought to light new allegations of violent behavior related to an ex-girlfriend.
Despite these ongoing issues, some Democratic politicians have chosen to back Platner, although many remain hesitant to disassociate from him entirely.
