Hispanic Caucus Calls for Inquiry into Sen. Alex Padilla's 'Attackers' and Urges Kristi Noem to Step Down

The Hispanic Caucus in Congress has removed Senator Alex Padilla (D-CA) from a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) press conference after he was involved in a disruptive incident, leading to calls for an investigation into law enforcement officials who handcuffed him. Furthermore, the Caucus is demanding the resignation of DHS Secretary Christie Noem.

“Senator Alex Padilla was pushed, tackled, handcuffed, and detained while trying to carry out his constitutional duties,” Caucus President Adriano Espillat (D-NY) stated.

This incident is scandalous enough as it is, but it’s even more alarming that the staff member involved worked for Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem. This sort of escalation is both dangerous and unacceptable. The Hispanic Caucus of Congress stands firmly with our colleague Alex Padilla, who represents all Californians. We call for a thorough investigation into the actions taken against Padilla, along with Secretary Noem’s resignation. It’s clear she is unfit to lead such an important agency. [Emphasis added]

Witnesses reported that Padilla began shouting at Noem during her speech. It appears that the security personnel at the press conference were unaware of Padilla’s status as a senator, as Noem mentioned he hadn’t introduced himself.

“This individual rushed in and jumped toward the podium, interrupting me; he was stopped, but didn’t identify himself, so he was removed,” Noem explained in an interview following the press briefing. “Once he did identify himself, the correct measures were taken.”

Dan Bongino, deputy director of the FBI, stated that Padilla wasn’t wearing a security pin and resisted law enforcement, suggesting their response was justified.

“This afternoon, regarding the incident in LA, the senator in question lacked a security pin and physically resisted law enforcement when approached,” Bongino stated in a post. I wrote it on X. “Our FBI agents acted completely appropriately in support of the Secret Service, and we appreciate their professionalism and service.”
