Historic 1905 building revamped for a new bank in downtown Kalamazoo

Kalamazoo’s Historic Building Transformed into Modern Bank

Kalamazoo, Michigan – A building that has stood for 120 years in downtown Kalamazoo has reopened, with over $1 million invested to modernize it into a bank.

Horizon Bank launched its new facility at 151 E. Michigan Ave. on Monday, August 11.

This structure, originally built in 1905, was once home to the Savings Bank in Kalamazoo City. Spanning 13,000 square feet, the second floor includes private offices, meeting rooms, communal areas, and a kitchen, all while showcasing an impressive neoclassical style in the basement.

“We’re truly honored to establish our downtown Kalamazoo Bank in this historic building,” expressed John M. Crandle, president of Horizon Bank Market.

“We’re excited to welcome the Kalamazoo community to our new branch,” branch manager Mike Thomas remarked. “Whether you’re handling business finances or seeking personal guidance, our team is here to equip you with the necessary tools and support for success.”

This branch takes a fresh approach, catering to both personal and commercial banking needs in a more modern setting.

Additionally, there are private areas available for financial consultations and planning. The space is managed by Treystar.

Officials from Horizon Bank mentioned their aim to become not just a temporary establishment, but a long-term partner in the ongoing revitalization of the downtown area.

“We’re optimistic about downtown Kalamazoo, especially with a new event center under construction and upcoming changes in traffic patterns,” Crandle added.

Horizon Bank also operates another location at 3250 W. Center Ave. in Portage.

Founded in 1873, Horizon Bank has expanded into Michigan since 2003, now boasting 81 locations across Michigan and Indiana.
