Hit-and-run driver fatally hits man in NYC, tries to set stolen van on fire: cops

The driver of a stolen van hit a 56-year-old man in the Bronx on Wednesday, tried to set the car on fire, and then charged on foot, police said.

Police said Alhaji Fofana was crossing Westchester Avenue near East 163rd Street in Longwood around 6:30 a.m. when the driver of a 2008 Ford van plowed into him. .

Authorities said Fofana, who was crossing the street, was left unresponsive in the roadway.

The seriously injured man, who lived about a mile away in Crotona Park East, was rushed to Lincoln Medical Center, where he died.

Investigation revealed that the driver of the Ford, whose license plate had also been stolen, attempted to set the vehicle on fire, abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.

The driver had not been captured as of Thursday afternoon.

An explanation was not immediately available.
