Hochul Challenges “Tax the Rich” Movement
Governor Kathy Hochul expressed her disagreement with the “tax the rich” initiative, a point championed by Mayor Zoran Mamdani and his supporters. This comes even as Mamdani pushes for a new tax on luxury vacation homes in New York City.
Hochul suggested that it’s not essential to impose higher taxes on wealthy individuals to address the outflow of residents seeking more affordable options in other states.
“We really shouldn’t be increasing taxes on the affluent,” Hochul stated during an interview on FOX 5’s “Good Day New York” on Wednesday. “It’s important that we don’t raise taxes on businesses that drive job creation and contribute to the funding of essential services for New Yorkers.”
She was responding to a concerning report from the Citizens’ Budget Committee indicating that New York State is falling behind the national average in both population and GDP growth. As Hochul approaches her re-election bid in November, her history of advocating for higher taxes on the wealthy is under scrutiny, with some questioning whether she might moderate her views going into the election.
Meanwhile, Mamdani and the Democratic Socialists of America continue to call for increased taxes on the wealthy. Following the recent primary victories of their candidates over establishment figures, they have pointed to Hochul as a potential target.
In an effort to gain support from Mamdani’s faction, Hochul has agreed to consider a new pied-à-terre tax on high-end second homes in New York. Early indications suggest this could negatively impact investment in the city’s luxury real estate market.
“That makes sense,” Hochul remarked, noting that the decision aims to alleviate the financial burden on long-term residents of New York. “It’s what we’ve decided to do,” she added, seemingly dismissing any reservations about the policy.
