Hochul warns about Trump administration interference in the NYC mayoral election

Hochul Urges Trump to Exit NYC Mayoral Race

Governor Kathy Hochul made a statement on Friday suggesting that President Trump should step back from the mayoral race in New York City. She mentioned that advisors at the White House are looking into potential job opportunities that might convince Mayor Eric Adams to bow out of his re-election bid, which many view as facing serious challenges.

Sources indicate that this arrangement, possibly involving an ambassadorial position, could allow Adams to withdraw from what seems to be a fading campaign. This move could potentially clear the path for former Governor Andrew Cuomo to emerge as a leading candidate against Democratic hopeful Zoran Mamdani.

“I think it’s important to remember that the president, contrary to his belief, isn’t a king or a kingmaker. He shouldn’t decide who the next mayor of New York City will be,” Hochul remarked to the press during an announcement on Long Island.

While not directly naming him, Hochul implied that Cuomo should refuse any overtures from Trump. It’s clear she sees the situation as compromising if people feel manipulated.

Cuomo, speaking to reporters on Thursday, also expressed his lack of interest in having Trump involved in the race. “I don’t want him in the race,” he asserted.

Interestingly, GOP mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa, who reportedly faced pressure to exit, has also declined to consider leaving the race.

Hochul’s comments on Friday were among the most pointed regarding this election cycle. As she prepares for her own re-election next year, she’s evidently distancing herself from previously contested races, even after Mamdani secured the Democratic nomination back in June.

Moreover, other prominent New York Democrats, such as Senator Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, have faced backlash from the left for not supporting Mamdani, seen as the frontrunner in this ongoing political contest.
