Hockey, rugby and cricket cut from streamlined 2026 Commonwealth Games | Commonwealth Games 2026

Lawn bowls has averted a crisis from the streamlined 2026 Commonwealth Games, which canceled high-profile sports hockey, rugby sevens and cricket.

Scottish organizers have scaled back the program from 22 sports scheduled in Victoria to just 10 at the reduced-price Glasgow event, which will be held at just four venues in the city centre.

When the program is officially announced on Tuesday, it will include 3×3 basketball, gymnastics, boxing, judo, netball, track cycling and weightlifting, in addition to the core sports of athletics and swimming.

Scotland won five medals, including three gold medals, in the lawn bowls competition at the 2022 Birmingham Games.

Victoria had retained the rights to host the 2026 Games, but withdrew last year and negotiations began with the Commonwealth Games Federation, which ultimately left the state with a bill of $589 million.

Glasgow stepped in this year to host a stripped-down version of the event, preserving what began in 1930 as the British Empire Games.

The Victorian government cited an increase in costs of more than $6 billion in its decision to withdraw, but Scottish cities are expected to be able to host the event at minimal cost, largely through compensation paid by Victoria. There is.

Participants in 2026 will stay in existing accommodation facilities rather than in the traditional Olympic Village. The city's 2014 Commonwealth Games venues will be repurposed, with athletics taking place at Scotstown Stadium, swimming at Tollcross, track cycling at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and indoor sports at the SEC.

Badminton, beach volleyball, diving, cycling events other than track and field, rhythmic gymnastics, squash, and table tennis are expected to be cancelled.

Commonwealth Games Australia, which was due to donate $13 million to national sporting bodies in the lead-up to the 2026 Games, is considering ways to support abandoned sports.

The possibility of continued payments to sports, with the hope of returning to sports programs in 2030, has not been ruled out.

Unlike the Olympics, which are separate from the Paralympics, the Commonwealth Games will continue to host para-events as part of a single event.

The 2026 Olympics will be held from July 23rd to August 2nd.
