Holger Rune attempted to pursue married Veronika Kudermetova.

Holger Rune, the Danish tennis player, recently found himself in a bit of a predicament involving Russian player Veronika Kudermetova. On a podcast hosted by his fellow countrywoman Elena Vesnina, Kudermetova shared that she received a message from Rune, but decided to decline any further communication due to her marital status.

“Recent texts from Rune were unexpected,” Kudermetova, 28, remarked to a UK outlet. “I told him, ‘Honestly, I might be a bit too old for you. If you check my Instagram, you’ll see I’m married.’ His response was, ‘Oh, sorry.’ Since that moment, I haven’t heard from him at all.” It seems a little awkward, doesn’t it?

Kudermetova has been married to her coach, Sergey Demekhine, since 2017. Demekhine, who is 41 and a former professional player himself, occasionally appears on Kudermetova’s social media. They even shared a public moment during a Wimbledon Champions dinner back in July.

In a notable achievement recently, Kudermetova and her Belgian doubles partner, Elise Mertens, triumphed in the women’s doubles final, defeating Jelena Ostapenko and Hsieh Su-Wei. It was a significant moment for Kudermetova, marking her first Grand Slam doubles victory. “I got really emotional after the match. I started crying a bit, but then I looked at Elise, and she was crying too. So, I thought, it’s okay to feel this way!” she shared.

As for Rune, currently ranked 9th in the world, things didn’t go as well for him at Wimbledon. He was knocked out in the first round after a tough five-set match against Chilean player Nicholas Jarry. Both athletes are currently at the National Bank Open, and comments about their past interaction have surfaced during matches, creating a little stir.

Kudermetova and Mertens are set to face off against Alexandra Panova from Russia and Guo Fang from China in a doubles match in Montreal, while Rune will take on Alexei Popilin of Australia in singles in Toronto.
