Silence from Hollywood Following Swalwell’s Resignation
When Eric Swalwell, the former congressman and California gubernatorial candidate, stepped down from Congress and halted his campaign, it seems that many of his high-profile Hollywood supporters suddenly went quiet.
Prominent figures like Sean Penn, Robert De Niro, and Jane Fonda have reportedly vanished from the scene. Following Swalwell’s recent controversies, there has been a noticeable lack of response from his elite donors, as highlighted in reports.
According to the coverage, Sean Penn contributed $15,000 to Swalwell and had numerous meetings with the California Democratic Party to demonstrate his backing. Similarly, actors such as Jon Hamm, Robert De Niro, and Jon Cryer each donated $10,000 and frequently vocalized their support for Swalwell on various platforms.
A long list of Hollywood insiders and celebrities had previously opened their wallets for Swalwell’s now-failed campaign for governor.
Additionally, comedian Kathy Griffin contributed $100,000, while television producers David Bennett and Sean Ryan raised $10,000, with director Rob Reiner also making a matching donation before the unexpected turn of events. Brian Lard, the CEO of Creative Artists Agency, led the donations with $12,500.
The report indicated that Swalwell received over $100,000 in campaign contributions from Hollywood’s elite.
Yet, there has been no strong condemnation from these supporters regarding the serious allegations surrounding Swalwell. None of them has commented on the increasing number of women who have come forward about their experiences, nor have they expressed relief that Swalwell has stepped away from public office.
As noted by a journalist, after Swalwell announced his resignation, many leaders from the “Me Too” movement remained silent about his alleged misconduct, including figures like Alyssa Milano and Lady Gaga.
Furthermore, the stars who championed the “Time’s Up” initiative, like Shonda Rhimes and Reese Witherspoon, also chose not to speak up regarding Swalwell’s situation.
