Employment Decline in the Entertainment Sector
A segment of the entertainment industry seems to be struggling, and, well, it’s tough to deny that this part of the industry has its issues. Recently, it lost 3,600 jobs, bringing the total employment in film and music down to 321,700.
Meanwhile, the broader U.S. economy added 57,000 jobs last month. So, there’s a question we might ask—could this be tied to some of the, let’s say, less favorable things happening in Hollywood?
Or perhaps the rise of AI is the reason behind these job losses, introducing another layer of complexity into the conversation.
Honestly, who really knows? Who even cares at this point?
For decades, critics have argued that the entertainment industry has contributed to disturbing trends—grooming and sexualizing children, pushing agendas that many don’t agree with, and generally undermining traditional values. It’s felt like a consistent decline in quality and coherence in the content produced.
So, why should we view it negatively that the industry is contracting and fewer people are involved with it? Honestly, it’s hard for me to feel like a hypocrite in this situation.
If we take a look back over the last decade, the current state of affairs might not seem that surprising. The steady fall in employment within the film and music sectors is part of a larger trend. In fact, that 3,600 job decrease has led to the lowest recorded employment in this area recently.
Ten years ago, there were about 439,000 jobs in film and music. So, to see this drop now is, well, notable. And while the overall job market in film and television production appeared to grow from 2016 to 2026, the takeaway from the Bureau of Labor Statistics hints that the situation is far from rosy.
It’s concerning that an industry capable of inspiring imaginations worldwide is facing such contraction. Many feel that Hollywood, in its current form, is deeply flawed.

So, here’s the thing: it seems pretty obvious that the traditional entertainment industry, as we knew it, is changing. On one side, there are those who continue to push their agendas, while on the other, ordinary people are beginning to express their creativity in new ways. How? Thanks to AI. This technology appears to be leveling the playing field, allowing anyone with talent the means to create and share their work. It’s a significant shift, and one that may very well reshape the industry as we know it.
