Hollywood's quiet stance on Iran reveals the deception of celebrity activism

The atmosphere at the Golden Globe Awards was heavy with self-congratulatory remarks about art’s ability to bring about change.

However, this year, the event contrasted sharply with the brutal oppression occurring in Iran, where the regime has intensified its cruelty against those demanding freedom. Several celebrities, including Mark Ruffalo and Wanda Sykes, wore pins to protest against ICE following the shooting of Renee Goode, yet many remained silent on the plight of Iranians facing violence and imprisonment.

When it suits their political narratives, we hear that “silence is violence,” but when the Iranian regime is hanging people or mutilating women for minor offenses, the cameras seem to turn off.

A significant shift in Iran may undermine both the Islamic Republic and Chinese interests.

It’s a harsh reality. The once-vibrant culture of activism in Hollywood feels hollow, driven by selective outrage that conveniently stops when it touches on Iranian government interests.

After a nationwide internet blackout in Iran and reports of a wave of state-sanctioned executions, influential voices in culture have largely chosen to ignore the issue. This silence sends a loud message to Iranians: “You’re on your own.”

This neglect appears deliberate—a troubling union between far-left Western ideologies and Islamic fundamentalism. The Iranian government continues oppressing women, executing LGBT individuals, and completely eliminating religious freedoms, yet it’s often excused because it positions itself against the West.

We must shift our perception of the Islamic Republic from a distant issue to one that significantly impacts the West. Whether it’s funding terrorist organizations or supporting destabilizing groups, the regime has no desire for coexistence.

Trump’s former envoy reportedly discusses matters with the exiled Iranian crown prince amidst ongoing protests.

Efforts to address these issues have peaked recently, but cultural leaders remain hesitant, afraid of being labeled Islamophobic for opposing a violent state.

Inside Iran, people are not waiting for approval to pursue liberalization. From Tehran to Mashhad, voices now demand a complete overhaul of the oppressive system rather than mere reforms. Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi’s call for a shift towards secular democracy reflects a population reclaiming its courage—a courage that seems to be missing in the West.

The era of negotiations has slipped away; it’s futile to negotiate with a regime that thrives on its opponents’ suppression. It’s time for Hollywood and politicians to speak out boldly. We don’t need more empty hashtags. We need a concerted effort to dismantle the Iranian regime’s influence.

If we keep choosing silence, we will not only fail the Iranian people, but we’ll also demonstrate that we, as a society, are divided. It’s high time we stop being passive observers and start advocating loudly for freedom.

There was a recent incident in Beverly Hills where Israeli comedian Guy Hochman was barred from performing, a clear act of political intimidation and discrimination. Israeli performers faced pressure to diminish their identities to perform. This cannot be called activism; it feels more like authoritarianism. Radical leftists and pro-Palestinian activists often use coercion to intimidate Jewish and Israeli voices. Suppressing free speech in the name of ideology is dangerous. A free society shouldn’t place such burdens on its artists, and targeting Jews while advocating for human rights is a blatant hypocrisy that must be rejected.

The U.S. government needs to extend its support beyond just sanctions and deeply engage with the Iranian people’s struggle. Americans should also urge cultural and corporate institutions that claim to uphold human rights to stop bowing to intimidation and ideological pressure.

Iranians globally are in desperate need of support in their fight against the Islamic Republic.

Now is the moment to stand firmly for a secular and democratic Iran, not to wait for convenient headlines. Freedom must prevail.
