Homan: 'I guarantee' funds will be cut from states not cooperating on deportation

President-elect Trump's nominee as “border czar” Tom Homan on Sunday threatened to cut funding to states that refuse to cooperate with the federal government's deportation program.

In an interview with Homan that aired Sunday, FOX News' Mark Levin said border czars “have very powerful weapons that Democrats use against state and local Republican governments whenever they take power.” I will have it,” he said. It's federally funded. ”

“If the governor says, 'I'm not going to work with you.' … I'm going to block you.' Then federal funding to that state should be cut, and that's very much what I'm saying, yeah. Then the people of that state understand that the governor is in charge and the mayor is in charge,” Levin added.

Homan agreed with Levin, saying, “It will happen, I guarantee you,” adding that the president-elect “will do it.”

Mr. Trump and Mr. Homan were highlighted by acrimonious talks over the border, including a threat to use military assets to support mass deportations of illegal immigrants.

Caroline Leavitt, a spokeswoman for Trump's transition team, also said the president-elect “is committed to launching the largest deportation operation of illegal criminals, drug traffickers, and human traffickers in U.S. history while reducing costs for families.” “We will bring together all necessary federal and state powers.”

Some Democratic governors, including Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker and California Gov. Gavin Newsom, have vowed to stand up to the incoming Trump administration, and Pritzker said he believes someone “is coming for my people.” If you do, you will come through me.”

Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs (D) said she would “continue to work with the Trump administration on border security efforts,” but “will not tolerate acts of terrorism against our communities or intimidation of Arizonans.” .

Homan said Sunday that Democrats need to put aside their feelings about Trump and work together.

“I will say this: President Trump has made clear, we are going to prioritize public safety threats and national security threats from the beginning.” [because] They pose the most danger to this country. What governor or mayor wouldn't want a public safety or national security threat emanating from their neighborhood or community? ” Homan said Sunday.

“That's their first responsibility. So you can hate Trump all you want, but you have to love your community more than you hate President Trump,” he added.

Democratic National Committee (DNC) Spokesperson Alex Floyd said in an emailed statement to The Hill on Monday that during the former Trump administration, “funding for law enforcement agencies was depleted as violent crime soared.” “I tried to reduce it,” he said.

“Now he and his allies are once again threatening to cut off resources and jeopardize the safety and security of the American people. “We will stand up to any attempts to fund law enforcement and play politics, no matter how reckless the scheme,” Floyd continued.
