Chicago’s Mayor and Immigration Policy Concerns

Brandon Johnson, the Mayor of Chicago, expressed his notable disapproval rating of over 60% recently. On Friday, he, along with Philadelphia’s District Attorney Larry Krasner and other prominent figures from the left, voiced their frustrations to Foreign Service officials regarding the Trump administration’s strict adherence to federal immigration laws.

Johnson explained how his administration’s so-called “sanctuary cities” aimed at countering federal law enforcement measures. “We cannot do this alone,” he emphasized to members of the United Nations Human Rights Council.

“The United Nations is not going to tell President Trump what to do.”

He called on Congress to apply the same accountability standards to the federal government as those expected globally. Johnson highlighted that this year alone, Chicago has recorded at least 368 murders, stressing that “no country should be above international law. Human rights are meaningless unless they are universal.”

In response to Johnson’s plea for foreign intervention in U.S. politics, Tom Homan, the White House border czar, commented on “The Big Weekend Show,” suggesting it showed Johnson’s lack of intelligence.

“We live with the consequences of that moral failure every day.”

Homan further criticized Johnson’s call for the United Nations to become involved in U.S. law enforcement, stating it was like “asking an arsonist how to put out a fire.” He asserted that the Trump administration’s message to potential immigrants—that they were “not welcome”—had saved the lives of many who would otherwise risk dangerous journeys to the United States.

Incidentally, as Johnson appealed to the United Nations, ICE made several arrests of dangerous undocumented individuals. One such arrest involved Alan Eduardo Garcia, a Mexican immigrant with a history of criminal behavior, including felony charges.

In a broader context, ICE has recently detained other individuals, including a convicted murderer from Mexico and a Somali immigrant with a record of serious offenses. Johnson has framed the Trump administration’s refusal to permit UN oversight as a “moral failure,” reiterating that these implications manifest day-to-day in Chicago.
