Border Progress and Legislative Plans Outlined
In an interview, Tom Homan, often referred to as the “border emperor,” discussed advancements at the border and highlighted components of what he calls the President’s “big beautiful bill” aimed at enhancing border security. He mentioned that all installations at the border could be made permanent, specifying plans for additional boundary walls and water buoys. He believes that these measures can actually save lives, as the visibility of water buoys would prevent risky crossings.
Data from Customs and Border Protection indicates that, from April 2024 to April 2025, border-related disturbances dropped by 93% during the Trump administration. One of their major goals has been to address the increasing rates of illegal immigration, and Homan asserts that this “big beautiful bill” will help to unify their success.
Homan also touched on legislation that involves Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), noting the need to secure more beds for detained individuals. Currently, about 50,000 are in custody, while funding is only available for 34,000 beds, placing a significant strain on resources. “This bill addresses that issue,” he stated.
Furthermore, Homan emphasized the importance of the bill during an emergency meeting that took place involving Trump and House Republicans. This legislation encompasses several aspects of Trump’s agenda, including border enforcement, tax regulations, debt management, and military funding. However, some factions within the House are expressing concerns over provisions like caps on state and local tax deductions, complicating the overall legislative journey.
President Trump showed strong support for the bill, advocating for cuts to Medicaid and tax deduction limits during a visit to Capitol Hill. Notably, Republican representatives from districts near the southern border have expressed their backing for the legislation. Rep. Darrell Issa from California commented on the bill’s potential: “It could indeed be a significant piece, offering robust border security while managing entry for those with criminal backgrounds.”
Additionally, Texas Republican Tony Gonaltz pointed out that the priorities included in this legislation reflect the hard-fought battles over the past years. He expressed his gratification in making progress for his border community.
Despite the optimism among GOP members, there remain significant hurdles before this law can reach the President for approval.
