Florida Home Invasion Takes a Turn

In an unexpected turn of events last week, a home invasion in Florida ended with a man renting an Airbnb shooting one of the suspected intruders and managing to fend off the other.

According to reports, Fort Lauderdale Police received a call about the incident around 6 p.m. Thursday, near Northwest 19th Avenue and Eighth Street.

“I just heard the shots, maybe at least 10, and then everybody went running,” said Arthur Butler Junior, a local resident who witnessed the chaos.

Two armed men broke into the property while the renter was inside. The renter, in an attempt to defend himself, shot one of the intruders in the torso, which law enforcement is describing as an act of self-defense.

The intruders fled from the scene, leaving behind a trail of blood that startled witnesses. Notably, a chair at the location bore visible bloodstains.

A dispatcher noted that the injured intruder was armed and that he had been shot. Reports suggest there were several individuals in a truck that drove away shortly after the incident.

Detectives later identified the injured suspect as 18-year-old Dareon Publien. He was located nearby with gunshot wounds to his upper torso and was rushed to the hospital for surgery. As of Friday morning, he is reported to be in critical but stable condition.

In a subsequent arrest, police detained Publien’s accomplice, identified as 25-year-old Sean Ian Thompson, who now faces charges of attempted felony murder and home invasion with a firearm, similar to the charges against Publien once he is released from the hospital.

As of Tuesday morning, only Thompson was being held in jail. Authorities have stated they are not looking for additional suspects at this time and are investigating whether the invasion was a random act or something more targeted.
