Homeowner unintentionally ignites house fire while using blowtorch to remove ice from roof

Massachusetts Homeowner Accidentally Starts Fire While Trying to Melt Ice

A homeowner in Milton, Massachusetts, unintentionally set his house ablaze while trying to melt ice that had built up over a challenging winter. This incident occurred as many Americans struggle with extreme cold weather.

According to Fire Deputy Chief John Arner, the fire began when a man used a blowtorch on the ice accumulated on his roof. Unfortunately, the fire quickly spread to the attic, transforming what initially seemed like a minor issue into a significant blaze.

Witnesses noted the flames accelerated rapidly. “When he got outside, he noticed flames right by the gutter,” remarked one neighbor. “It was wild; all of a sudden, there was smoke everywhere. It looked like the entire roof was on fire.”

Initially, firefighters believed it was a small fire. Arner noted, “We thought it would be manageable, so we took down the gutters on that side, but then the whole attic was soon engulfed.” Firefighters worked tirelessly for hours to extinguish the flames, even calling in additional crews due to the bitterly cold temperatures, which were uncommonly low for this area, around nine miles south of Boston.

Fortunately, there were no injuries reported from the fire. However, local residents expressed concerns. They felt this incident could serve as a cautionary tale, especially as many confront the challenges posed by heavy snowfall and ice in the wake of recent severe weather.

Officials warned against the dangers of tackling ice removal without professional assistance. Arner advised, “It’s better to hire a professional ice management service. Don’t take risks; avoid getting on the roof.”
