Honda recalls 750K vehicles after air bag issue

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Honda has recalled more than 750,000 vehicles over airbag problems.

“There is a possibility that the weight sensor on the passenger seat could crack and short out, causing the airbag to not suppress as intended,” said Alex Ansley, head of the NHTSA’s Recall Management Division, Defect Investigation and Enforcement Division.

A defective seat weight sensor could cause the airbag to deploy “unintentionally in a crash,” increasing the chance of injury. According to a letter from NHTSA to Honda, dealers will “replace the seat weight sensor free of charge” and a letter will be mailed to owners in mid-March notifying them of the recall.

Toyota said last week that owners of older Corolla and RAV4 models should also stop driving them because of another problem with their airbags.

“When an airbag deploys, the internal components are likely to explode and eject sharp metal fragments, potentially causing serious injury or death to the driver and passengers,” Toyota said in a statement.
