Honduran Came as Unaccompanied Minor, Ordered Deported in 2010, Now Arrested for Texas Murder

HOUSTON, Texas — A Honduran immigrant who entered the United States as an unaccompanied minor faces murder charges in Harris County, Texas. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials said the man was ordered deported from the United States by an immigration judge in 2010 after he failed to appear for a scheduled hearing.

Last week, the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force arrested Alex Mejia Pineda, 33, in Huntsville, Texas, on suspicion of being involved in the murder of Eric Eduardo Zavala-Flores, 28. According to Fox 26 Houston.

Prosecutors said Mejia Pineda and co-defendant Alex Herrera Calderon, 24, a U.S. citizen, shot and killed Zavala-Flores in the parking lot of a northeast Houston bar. Police found the victim's body in a burnt-out truck in San Jacinto County.

A spokesperson for ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) in Houston told Breitbart Texas that Mejia Pineda entered the United States illegally as an unaccompanied minor. In 2010, an immigration judge under the Obama-Biden administration ordered a then-19-year-old Honduran man to be deported. Mejia Pineda had no contact with law enforcement until his arrest last week.

ERO personnel, working with the Gulf Coast Violent Offender Task Force and the Walker County Sheriff's Office, took the Honduran fugitive into custody on December 16th.

Mejia-Pineda and Calderon are charged with the murder of Zavala-Flores. Mejia Pineda is being held on $500,000 bail. ERO officials deployed immigration agents to prevent the suspect from being released on bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for February 13, 2025, in the 262nd Criminal District Court, presided over by Judge Lori Gray, according to court records obtained by Breitbart Texas.

Bail for co-defendant Calderon is set at $100,000, according to court records. The next court date will be January 16, 2025, in the same courtroom.
