Hoosiers quarterback Fernando Mendoza expresses gratitude to God after significant victory over Ohio State

After leading his team to a Big Ten Championship victory against Ohio State with a score of 13-10, Hoosiers QB Fernando Mendoza spoke candidly with Fox Sports, attributing his success to God.

Mendoza, who completed 222 yards and tossed a touchdown at Lucas Oil Stadium, was asked by Jenny Taft from Fox what it felt like to win the Big Ten.

“It’s an incredible experience,” he replied.

He followed up quickly, saying, “All glory to God” for the win.

“I want to give all the glory to God! We really weren’t expected to end up here! But, the glory goes to God, our fantastic coaches, amazing teammates, and everyone involved. Who would’ve imagined the Hoosiers reaching this point? But look at us now, Hoosiers are champions! Let’s go!” he expressed.

Taft pointed out that the team describes themselves as “a bunch of misfits” and inquired why Indiana feels like the right home for them.

“This is absolutely the right place. We focus on the process!” Mendoza emphasized. “Be it the offensive line, defense, coaches, or special teams, we take it one day at a time. We’re united towards a common goal! That’s what distinguishes us; we’re like brothers! Even in tough times, we have one another’s backs, and our bond is unbreakable!”

Mendoza further elaborated on his connection with Hoosier wide receiver Charlie Becker and their teamwork.

“Day in and day out, all summer, we were out throwing before practice—7 a.m. on Sundays, working on routes—and you’re seeing those efforts paying off now,” he shared. “He’s my roommate! I’m really thrilled for such a young talent, and our defense played outstanding…what a moment!”

With this impressive performance, Mendoza has emerged as a strong contender for the Heisman Trophy this year.

Over the season, he passed for 2,758 yards, achieving 32 touchdowns with just five interceptions. After an early interception in the game, he regrouped and led the Hoosiers to their 13th consecutive victory.
