Homan Defends Trump’s Immigration Policy
Tom Homan, a key border official from the White House, expressed strong disapproval of those criticizing President Donald Trump’s immigration policy during a speech at a policy conference in Washington, D.C. He emphasized that secure borders save lives, recounting disturbing experiences from his lengthy career in border patrol, including instances where migrants perished in tragic circumstances.
During his address at the Faith and Freedom Coalition’s Pathways to Majority conference, Homan shared a harrowing story, aiming to counter the narrative that the Trump administration’s approach is inhumane. He argued that increased border security could prevent migrants from undertaking perilous journeys orchestrated by criminal cartels.
“This morning, I want to tell you why I’m angry,” Homan stated, asserting that media portrayals of Trump’s policies have been misleading and painted him in a harsh light.
“Nothing could be further from the truth,” he said, arguing that inadequate border enforcement actually leads to situations where migrants face exploitation and violence at the hands of smugglers and cartels. “What President Trump is doing is saving lives,” he insisted.
Homan went on to describe a particularly grim episode from his career. He recounted witnessing a scene where 19 deceased individuals were found in the back of a tractor-trailer, including a young boy who succumbed to extreme heat while attempting to escape. “They were all burned to death,” he shared. “I arrived at the crime scene and they were all in their underwear, trying to escape the 170-degree heat in the back of an airless steel truck.” The gravity of those deaths lingered as he reflected, “Think about how these people died.”
He also shared personal interactions with young girls who, sadly, had been victims of sexual assault on their journey to the U.S. border. “I have sat down on my knees and talked with 9-year-old girls who have been repeatedly raped by cartel members,” Homan recalled, stressing the dangers of unsecured borders. “Well, guess what? We don’t have that 9-year-old girl that everyone’s kneeling down and talking to now. President Trump closed the border.”
Throughout his remarks, Homan remained a staunch defender of Trump, maintaining that the president’s policies have resulted in unprecedented border security and that the administration’s immigration enforcement actions aim to prevent more tragedies tied to human trafficking and cartel violence.
Concluding his speech, he reiterated, “Secure borders save lives. Secure borders keep our nation safe. No one has done that better than President Trump. And we’re not done yet.” Homan’s comments came amidst ongoing criticisms from Democrats and immigrant rights advocates regarding the administration’s aggressive stance on immigration enforcement and mass deportation efforts.
