Audio revealed that the control tower was trying desperately to guide the pilot, saying: You can do it on any runway, in any location. ”

But the pilot's last words were, “We're out of control here.”

Authorities have not released the victims. However, a source close to the family told Hawaii News Now that one of the victims was Hiram Defries, a pilot-in-training.

The plane crashed into a vacant state-owned building slated for demolition, which Honolulu Fire Chief Sheldon Hao called a “best-case scenario.”

Officials also praised the pilot for avoiding populated areas.

“This could have been a lot worse, but the situation was limited to the two people flying the plane…From what we understand, the pilots were trying to minimize the collision. “We made a lot of adjustments,” said the Hawaii Department director. Transportation Ed Sniffen.

Many witnesses heard a loud bang and saw large plumes of black smoke at the time of the crash.

“I was sitting at my desk and suddenly I saw a small plane fly past my office window on the seventh floor,” Nancy Timko told the outlet. “I thought, 'Oh, he's really low.' Then he started banking back toward the airport. Then I heard a loud bang.”

Another witness told the magazine: “I was working and all of a sudden I heard a loud thud and I looked outside and there was just this weird smoke and a colleague told me that there was a plane right next to our building. They told me it had crashed.”

The National Transportation Safety Board has begun an investigation into the accident.
