David Orkin’s Aspirations in Politics

David Orkin, a candidate supported by the Democratic Socialists of America, is trying to challenge a close ally of former New York City Mayor Eric Adams in the state Legislature. Despite coming from a privileged background as the son of a famed colorectal surgeon, he presents himself as a representative of the “working class.”

Orkin, a lawyer for the immigrant rights organization Make the Road New York, recently stated his commitment to justice, highlighting his identity as a “proud son of a Mexican immigrant mother.” He shared personal details about his family history, mentioning his Jewish grandparents who fled persecution in Mexico. His announcement came as he prepares to run against Congresswoman Jennifer Rajkumar in the upcoming Democratic primary.

He aims to solidify his image as a true “working class” New Yorker who will further Albany Mayor Zoran Mamdani’s socialist agenda while representing the diverse 38th Congressional District, which includes areas of Queens like Richmond Hill and Woodhaven.

However, public records reveal that the 34-year-old grew up in a wealthy suburb of Maryland and is the son of Dr. Bruce Orkin, a prominent figure in colorectal surgery who has treated a range of notable patients during his career, including those associated with the White House and Congress.

Currently, Dr. Orkin holds a prestigious position at Carle Illinois College of Medicine and resides in a condo in Chicago valued at around $1 million, in addition to another property in Florida worth approximately $400,000.

David Orkin graduated from Vassar College in 2013, noted for its progressive environment, and later earned his law degree from the State University of New York School of Law. At Vassar, he wrote a senior thesis that explored “whiteness” and how it affects privilege, reflecting a nuanced academic background.

Rajkumar’s seat is seen as a target by the Democratic Socialists, given her close ties to Adams, who is known for his opposition to socialist values. She has often criticized both socialists and far-left progressives within the party. Since taking office as New York’s first Indian-American elected official in January 2021, Rajkumar has established herself as a prominent figure, often noted for her public appearances alongside Adams.

Brady Guerrero, a community leader from Richmond Hill, expressed skepticism regarding candidates like Orkin who come from wealthy backgrounds. He questioned their understanding of the struggles faced by working-class individuals in the district, emphasizing a need for representatives who genuinely reflect the community they serve.

Mamdani, the son of a celebrated professor and film director, successfully won the mayoralty last year, indicating a shift towards more progressive candidates in local politics.

As Rajkumar campaigns for re-election, following an attempt to challenge Jumaane Williams, Orkin has asserted that he is not connected to the 38th District. She, on the other hand, argues that marginalized communities deserve respect and real representation, distancing her platform from those who may seem disconnected from their lived realities. Despite multiple attempts to reach Orkin for comment, he hasn’t responded.
