House committee delays Ghislaine Maxwell deposition, reports ongoing 'good-faith discussions'

House Republicans Postpone Deposition of Ghislaine Maxwell

In a recent development from Washington, House Republicans have decided to delay a deposition scheduled for August 11 with Ghislaine Maxwell, who has been convicted of sex trafficking. This decision came just hours after she was transferred to a low-security federal facility in Texas.

James Comer, the Oversight Committee Chairman, declined a request made by Maxwell’s lawyer, David Oscar Marx. Maxwell, now 63, was moved to a facility in Bryan, Texas, often referred to as “Club Fed.” Her legal team continues to seek ways to challenge her 20-year sentence related to the trafficking and abuse of a minor.

Comer indicated in a communication to Marx that the committee was open to further negotiations regarding the terms of her testimony. However, he emphasized that they were not prepared to offer her immunity at this time. While they won’t be providing questions ahead of the deposition, Comer mentioned they would maintain their tradition of engaging in open discussions.

In addition, Comer noted that the U.S. Supreme Court is set to review a certiorari petition on September 29. Given this timeline, the committee is willing to postpone the deposition until after the court’s decision.

In response to Comer’s announcement, Markus and his colleague Melissa Madrigal expressed their appreciation for the postponement, stating their intent to continue collaborating with Congress thoughtfully while ensuring Maxwell’s constitutional rights are protected.
