The Republican-led House Rules Committee voted 8-4 on Monday to bring the impeachment charges against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to the floor for a vote.
A vote in the House of Representatives on articles of impeachment, which Republicans narrowly support, could take place as early as Tuesday.

The resolution finds that Mayorkas repeatedly violated laws enacted by Congress regarding immigration and border security during his time in office and “deliberately and systematically refused to abide by federal immigration law.”
If the vote passes, Mayorkas will become the first Cabinet member to be impeached in nearly 150 years.
The article of impeachment alleges that Mayorkas “refuses to comply with federal immigration law” in the face of a record surge of migrants at the southern border, and that his insistence to Congress that the U.S.-Mexico border is secure “has undermined the public’s trust.” He accused her of betraying him.

He said the Republican charges against him are “politically motivated and completely baseless,” and pointed to constitutional scholars who have made similar assessments. He said he would be prepared to defend himself if a Senate trial were to take place, which typically follows an impeachment resolution.
