House Democrat worries that the party is creating ‘martyrs’ out of antisemitic activists

Democrat Dan Goldman from New York has voiced concerns that his party has begun labeling individuals who hold anti-Semitic views as “martyrs,” particularly in light of their opposition to President Trump.

The Trump administration has faced backlash from Democrats for its attempts to deport foreign students involved in anti-Israel and pro-Hamas demonstrations on college campuses after October 7.

Goldman characterized this as a violation of First Amendment rights and cautioned his fellow Democrats to tread carefully when it comes to defending those who express anti-Semitic sentiments.

Dems Divided on Anti-Semitism Within Their Ranks

Goldman remarked, “Because of Donald Trump’s overreach, supporters of anti-Semitism are now seen as martyrs, which is quite alarming.” He made this statement during a meeting of the Jewish Democratic Council on Thursday.

He suggested that more focus should be directed towards discussing the hostages currently held in Gaza rather than on the detention of individuals supporting anti-Semitism.

“If our party focuses too much on these detentions, we might overlook the plight of the hostages,” he added.

Goldman, who co-chairs a bipartisan task force aimed at combating anti-Semitism, urged Democrats, especially Jewish ones, to confront anti-Semitic remarks from within their ranks and advised Trump not to divert attention from the issue.

He also encouraged Republicans to do the same, claiming that the Trump administration has exploited concerns about anti-Semitism to further its own agenda.

“It’s deeply troubling that Trump abuses his power under the guise of fighting anti-Semitism; it complicates our collaborative efforts on the task force,” Goldman expressed.

Goldman was among 21 House Democrats in 2024 who called for Columbia University’s council to disband an unauthorized group of anti-Semitic activists on campus.
