House Dems threaten to block Trump’s big tariff plans: ‘Unacceptable’

House Democrats are trying to block President-elect Donald Trump from enacting sweeping tariff plans days before he takes office.

The new bill, led by Reps. Susan DelBene, D-Wash., and Don Beyer, D-Virginia, and supported by 11 other Democrats, would allow President Trump to use his executive emergency powers to increase import taxes. The contents will prevent you from doing so.

During his campaign, President Trump promised to impose 60% tariffs on goods from China and up to 20% tariffs on other countries with which the United States trades.

He recently told Truth Social, “Foreign Revenue ServiceTo “levy customs duties, duties, and all revenues derived from foreign sources.”

As Treasury Secretary nominee Scott Bessent told senators this week, President Trump and his allies believe that the plan would strengthen U.S. manufacturing while allowing adversaries like China to “currently They argue that it will make it more difficult for countries to “export their way out of the economic slump.”

In theory, the commander-in-chief could bypass Congress and impose sweeping tariffs by declaring a state of emergency under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.

But Democrats argue that the costs of tariffs will simply be passed on to American consumers.

“Americans have clearly and consistently said that the high cost of living is one of their top concerns,” DelBene said in a statement. “Not only would widespread tariffs raise domestic costs and likely send the economy into recession, they would also likely lead to significant retaliation and harm American workers, farmers, and businesses.”

“Trump's proposed tariffs abuse emergency authorities to raise prices for Americans and are unacceptable,” Bayer said in a statement.

But not all Democrats rejected the plan.

Rep. Jared Golden (D-Maine), a moderate Democrat known for often breaking away from his own party, introduced his own bill this week that would impose a flat 10% tariff on all imports.

The 10% level is reviewed annually, with room for an increase or decrease of 5% depending on current U.S. economic conditions.

He claimed in a statement: main morning star“Universal tariffs, along with other policies that support domestic energy production, labor unions, and manufacturing, shift our economy from one centered on cheap goods and consumption to one centered on production and innovation. The purpose is to change direction.”
