House Ethics Committee Begins Inquiry into Rep. Cory Mills as Censure Motion Does Not Pass

The House Ethics Committee has initiated an investigation into Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.) after a censure effort. Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) has brought forth a number of serious allegations regarding ethical, legal, and personal misconduct.

Things escalated on the House floor this past Wednesday during the incident involving Mace. A motion calling for an immediate vote on the censure resolution was read aloud. It proposed removing Mills from his positions on both the House Armed Services Committee and the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

“You are a disgrace,” a colleague from South Carolina was reportedly heard saying, while a Florida congressman was nearby, according to ABC News.

According to reports, Mace mentioned that Mills had used extremely vulgar language towards him, claiming he directed insults that ranged from crude terms to outright offensive comments.

The ethics investigation launched just hours prior to the censure vote proceeded with a significant result—a 310 to 103 vote in favor of referring the matter to the committee.

As noted by ABC News, this referral allows the House of Representatives to avoid publicly reprimanding its members.

The Ethics Committee will look into various allegations against Mills since his term began in 2023. This includes whether he breached the House’s code of conduct or legal statutes, especially regarding claims that he didn’t properly disclose required information to the House.

The investigation will explore alleged violations of campaign finance laws linked to the 2022 and 2024 elections, improper solicitation or acceptance of gifts—especially concerning privately sponsored official travel, misuse of his position for personal benefits, allegations of misconduct relating to sexual misconduct or dating violence, and any misuse of Congressional resources.

Mace’s censure resolution and a subsequent letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) outline the specific claims and allegations of “stolen valor.”

Mills responded to these accusations by stating, “These claims are false and misrepresent the nature of my interactions,” during a statement he provided to ABC News.
