House Majority Whip: Biden only interested in border because it’s a ‘political liability’

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) on Saturday criticized President Biden for believing he is more interested in securing the southern border, as lawmakers continue to fight over the Senate-backed border deal. criticized.

Negotiations have been going on for several weeks, but the House has not yet seen the legal text of the proposed bill, Emmer said. He also criticized the president for rolling back border measures put in place under former President Donald Trump and questioned recent pledges to strengthen national security.

“Neil, the only reason President Biden is interested in discussing this issue is because it's now a political responsibility of the White House,” Emmer said. Said He said this in an interview with FOX News' Neil Kabuto.

“Please show me the text,” he added later. “Let's make sure what we're doing on our southern border is a real solution. It's not just words.”

His comments come as Biden would close the border “in the event that the border becomes overwhelmed” if Congress passes a bipartisan border security bill (according to reports of the proposed deal, the number of migrants per day would be around 30%). It was issued after pledging to limit the number of people to 5,000 people.

“Let me be clear,” Biden said in a statement Friday. “What has been negotiated so far, if passed into law, would be the toughest and fairest reform to secure our borders ever in this country.”

“It would give him, as president, new emergency powers to close the border in the event of border congestion,” he continued. “If given that authority, I would exercise it the day I signed the bill.”

Emmer isn't optimistic that Biden will even get the votes unless he restores Trump-era policies such as “Remain in Mexico,” which requires asylum seekers to wait in Mexico until their processing is completed. He said no. Vote this agreement on the floor.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) made similar remarks Friday in a letter to Dear Colleagues. He said the border security and Ukraine aid bill would be “killed on arrival” in the House if proposed conditions so far were accurate.

“Since the Senate does not appear to be in agreement, I wanted to provide a quick update on supplements and borders,” he wrote. “If the rumors about the contents of the draft were true, it would have been dead on arrival in the House of Commons anyway.”

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Confirmed On Friday in December, the number of encounters at the southern border hit a record high of 302,034.
