The House passed the Laken-Reilly Act on Tuesday morning, despite opposition from 159 Democrats. The law requires the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to detain illegal aliens arrested, charged, or convicted of crimes such as robbery, theft, theft, and shoplifting.
All current House Republicans I voted He supports the Laken Riley Act, named after the 22-year-old nursing student who was brutally murdered in Athens, Georgia, last year by an illegal alien released into the interior of the United States.
Months before Riley's murder, Jose Antonio Ibarra was cited in Athens for shoplifting charges and later issued a bench warrant for failure to appear on that charge. Despite the charges, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) did not take him into custody.
The Laken-Riley Act requires DHS to detain illegal aliens arrested, charged, or convicted of crimes such as robbery, theft, theft, and shoplifting.
Forty-eight House Democrats joined Republicans in supporting the Laken-Reilly Act, while 159 Democrats voted against the bill.
Rep. Mike Collins (R-Ga.), who introduced the Laken Riley Act, wrote to X that he was grateful for the bill's passage and hoped the Senate would do the same.
“I am grateful that the House of Representatives passed the Laken-Riley Act in an overwhelmingly bipartisan manner,” Collins wrote. “No family should have to go through what the Laken family endured. It's up to the Senate to work together to get this important bill to President Trump's desk.”
Last year, Senate Democrats twice blocked Senate consideration of the Laken Riley Act, hoping they wouldn't have to publicly oppose the bill.
