House GOP Proposes Stricter Penalties for Attacks on ICE Agents

House Republicans are advancing legislation aimed at increasing penalties for assaults on immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) agents, which intensifies the ongoing partisan debate surrounding illegal immigration and public safety.

Representative Ashley Hinson from Iowa introduced the “Protecting and Respect for the ICE Act,” which is co-sponsored by Representatives Brad Knott from North Carolina and Diana Harshbarger from Tennessee. This bill proposes to double the maximum prison sentence and fine for anyone who assaults, resists, or obstructs an ICE agent or employee.

According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), there was an 830% increase in ICE personnel between late January and mid-July compared to the same timeframe in 2024.

A spokesperson for Hinson mentioned that the intent of the bill is to curb violence against federal agents, particularly as anti-ICE protests have risen.

Hinson attributes the rise in these attacks to radical activists. “Instead of supporting law enforcement, the extreme left seems to side with dangerous illegal aliens,” she stated, expressing her belief that it’s unacceptable to undermine the safety gear that ICE agents rely on.

She emphasized, “Anyone who attacks an ICE agent must face the harshest punishment.”

Since taking back control of federal resources, Congressional Republicans and the Trump administration have ramped up support for ICE. Earlier this year, President Trump mandated an ICE-led operation in major U.S. cities, which drew criticism from Democrats and progressive organizations.

In recent developments, Chicago has reportedly been preparing for an ICE crackdown, with National Guard forces being deployed. Mayor Brandon Johnson, along with Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, has expressed opposition to this approach.

Last week, Johnson signed an executive order that prohibits Chicago Police from collaborating with any “illegal or unconstitutional actions” performed by federal law enforcement or the military within the city.
