House Republicans aim to tighten border crossings further.

House Republicans Push for Major Border Security Investment

House Republicans are aiming for a significant increase in border security funding, seeking to build on the enforcement gains seen during the Trump administration.

Members of the House Homeland Security Committee propose allocating $46 billion towards a new border wall system. This isn’t just about constructing walls; the funding will also go toward technology enhancements including cameras, sensors, lights, access roads, and more that will bolster the country’s border enforcement capabilities. Additionally, over $5 billion is targeted to strengthen U.S. ports of entry and technical capabilities during this timeframe.

“As cartel tactics innovate, Congress needs to equip [Customs and Border Protection],” stated Mark Green, the Homeland Security Committee Chairman. He elaborated that technology, such as drones and ground sensors, would significantly enhance the effectiveness of border personnel, allowing for quicker and more strategic responses. “Our ‘One Big Beautiful Bill Act’ is focused on modernizing and upgrading the technology at ports of entry, with funding exceeding $5 billion,” he added, mentioning the need to thwart dangerous substances entering the country.

Shortly after taking office, President Donald Trump set about reversing many of the border policies established under the Biden administration, signing a number of executive orders to curb illegal crossings along the U.S.-Mexico border.

According to the White House, Trump signed over 140 executive orders in his first 100 days, many targeted at border enforcement. These included resuming wall construction, emergency declarations, and labeling cartels as terrorist organizations.

He also successfully encouraged Mexico and Canada to allocate resources toward supporting border security, with Mexican President Claudia Sinbaum pledging to send 10,000 troops to aid in reducing drug trafficking and illegal immigration.

The outcome has been a substantial decline in border crossings since the Biden administration took over. Daily encounters have plummeted by 93%, with immigrant crossings declining by 99.99%. Additionally, incidents involving illegal immigrants that manage to evade border patrol and are considered a public safety threat have decreased by 95%.

Seizures of fentanyl have also sharply reduced, with data from CBP showing a significant drop. In April, federal agents confiscated 758 pounds of fentanyl, down from 1,400 pounds in April 2024 and a massive decrease from the 3,200 pounds seized in April 2023.

Republicans are eager to build on these successes by investing billions in border technology. Michael McCall, a Republican from Texas and Vice Chair of the Committee, noted, “The cartels are evolving and becoming more sophisticated in their smuggling methods.” During a recent border visit, he witnessed drones operated by the cartels overhead. “It’s crucial to equip Border Patrol with advanced surveillance technology,” he emphasized.

“Our committee aims to meet the challenge by providing both skilled personnel and the essential technology needed in today’s battle against border issues,” he continued. Technologies like integrated surveillance towers and unmanned aircraft systems can greatly enhance CPB’s effectiveness while also saving taxpayer dollars and ensuring public safety.

Land Republicans are also advocating for over $1 billion dedicated to non-intrusive testing technologies at ports of entry. Additionally, the committee seeks $1.2 billion for aviation and marine operations that would improve surveillance capabilities using cutting-edge technology. Another $673 million is earmarked for CBP’s biometric entry and exit systems, enhancing the agency’s capabilities to identify fraud and monitor visa overstays.

Despite improvements in curbing illegal immigration and combating fentanyl trafficking, advocates for tougher border policies wish to capitalize on these successes with increased enforcement funding. The effort is gaining momentum under Trump’s guidance as GOP lawmakers rally around “one big and beautiful bill.”

During a recent meeting with GOP lawmakers, Trump expressed urgency about advancing the bill amidst ongoing legislative debates. Speaker Mike Johnson is working to facilitate a major tax and spending package through the House by Thursday, aiming to meet a critical deadline.

“The safety of our community, as well as that of CBP personnel, hinges on Congress passing this bill,” Green said.
