On Wednesday, the House, which is controlled by Republicans, passed a law aimed at enhancing national reciprocity for retired law enforcement officers. However, it has not yet established similar reciprocity for private citizens.
The legislation, known as the Retired Officers Act (HR 2243), was approved with a vote tally of 229 to 193.
Following the vote, Michelle & Associates Costa Smolos expressed on social media: “The founders would be disheartened to see the right to bear arms limited for ordinary citizens while being better respected for retired officers. There should be reciprocity for everyone.”
Just days after winning the presidential election against Kamala Harris on November 11, 2024, President Trump began advocating for national concealed carry reciprocity, according to Breitbart News.
On January 8, 2025, Representative Richard Hudson (R-NC) introduced the Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act (HR 38).
Hudson remarked about HR 38, stating, “The Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act will safeguard the rights of citizens, allowing them to navigate between states without the fear of conflicting laws or civil lawsuits. I am proud to see such broad support and will continue pushing for this law.”
