House Republicans are preparing to vote on a resolution to condemn the Biden administration and Vice President Harris, specifically, for their handling of the U.S.-Mexico border.
The move is an apparent response to President Biden’s announcement on Sunday that Harris would not run for reelection, making her the leading contender for the Democratic presidential nomination.
It also offers a preview of what policy arguments Republicans may make against Harris as they adapt to a changing political environment.
of SolutionThe Democratic National Committee, led by House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), has referred to Harris’ role as “secretary for border affairs,” but that is not the official title Biden has given her, nor has he asked her to oversee all of U.S.-Mexico border policy. Biden has asked Harris to lead a diplomatic campaign to address the root causes of migration from Central American countries.
Nevertheless, the resolution harshly criticizes Harris for “only visiting the southern border on June 25, 2021, 93 days into her term as Border Commissioner,” and accuses “the far-left Democratic open border policy of President Biden and Commissioner Harris of being the cause of this historic crisis.”
Republican leaders added a vote on the resolution to this week’s schedule on Monday night, and the House Rules Committee will hold an emergency hearing on Tuesday afternoon to prepare the resolution for a vote on the floor.
“Kamala Harris’s failed leadership has led to the worst open border crisis in history,” Stefanik said in a statement. “Kamala Harris, the person in charge of Biden’s open border agenda, and every elected Democrat bears responsibility for this border crisis, and they must all be held accountable for their role in endangering our national security and turning every community into a border community.”
