House set to challenge Biden green energy standards for washing machines with ‘Liberty in Laundry’ bill vote

Lawmakers are expected to vote soon on a bill aimed at repealing the Biden administration's green energy standards for home appliances.

In February, the Department of Energy (DOE) introduced a final rule that imposes stricter energy standards for residential clothes washers (RCWs), such as washing machines. The regulation would prohibit the sale of certain models of less efficient washers and dryers, according to the DOE.

Just weeks after the new standards were announced, Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) introduced a bill, the Freedom to Laundry Act, to circumvent the Biden administration's green energy push.

The House is scheduled to vote on the bill on Tuesday. If passed, the bill could allow the Secretary of Energy and the DOE to block “the implementation of new or modified energy efficiency standards for clothes washers that are not technically feasible or economically justifiable.” .

“Let me be clear: President Biden and Washington bureaucrats’ war on consumer electronics will only harm American families and small businesses,” said House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-Louisiana. The state detailed the measure on its website. “You should be able to decide which washing machine is best for you and your family. You shouldn't have to let the government decide for you.”

“For decades, DOE's appliance standards actions for clothes washers and dryers have resulted in significant savings for American households,” Department of Energy Secretary Jennifer M. Granholm said in a February press release. At the same time, we have reduced harmful carbon emissions.”

House Republicans have introduced a series of bills this Congress that would block the Biden administration's efforts to crack down on home appliances that run on natural gas.

But Democratic lawmakers are taking steps to encourage people to switch to green appliances, such as in New York state, where Gov. Kathy Hochul recently gave up to 840% to residents who replaced their clothes dryers with greener alternatives. Introduced a scheme offering dollar payments.
