House Speaker Mike Johnson Says No to Federal Abortion Restrictions

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) said he does not expect Republicans to pass federal abortion regulations even if they control both chambers of Congress and the White House.

In an interview with politiko published Johnson on Friday pointed to former President Donald Trump’s public position on abortion, which Trump made clear in April about how he would address the issue if elected president in November. ended months of speculation. Johnson also quoted the late Andrew Breitbart, the founder of Breitbart News, who famously coined the phrase “politics is downstream from culture.”

“If Republicans control both houses of Congress and the White House next year, do you expect to see some sort of national abortion ban passed?” politiko‘s Rachel Bade asked Johnson.

“No, it’s not,” Johnson replied.

He continued:

President Trump said this is now within the purview of each state.later dobbs I think that’s the decision. You see, I am a lifelong pro-lifer. I am a product of teenage pregnancy. And I believe in the sanctity of human life. It is also an important faith item for me. But here are her 434 colleagues. We all live by our own philosophical principles, but we need political agreement.

[Andrew] Breitbart said politics is downstream from culture. He’s right. Before we can get political consensus on highly controversial issues like this, we need to get cultural consensus. And what needs to be done to build a culture of life, educate people about its importance, and truly uphold the principle of our country’s birth certificate: the declaration that “all men are created equal.” I think there are many. ” And there is value in that. But we have a long way to go to build political consensus here to do something in this regard.

politiko‘s Ryan Rizza also asked Johnson:Are you planning to introduce an abortion bill before the election?”

“No,” Johnson replied.

When President Trump announced his official position on abortion ahead of the November presidential election, he said that while the issue of abortion often represents some form of deep moral choice for many voters, the We have to win the election,” he said.

“You have to follow the heart of this issue, but don’t forget that in order to restore our culture and, in fact, to save our country, which is currently in very sad decline. It means we have to win the election.” “Our country needs help. It needs unity. We all need to work closely together.”

Like President Joe Biden’s campaign, Democrats are betting heavily on abortion as a theme to drive turnout, using the issue to paint Republicans as “radical” and a threat to women. Mr. Biden’s campaign continues to insist that Mr. Trump, if elected, would pass a federal ban on abortion.

“They are hell-bent on spreading misinformation and lies about President Trump because Crooked Joe can’t keep up in the polls. The American people know the truth,” Trump spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt said in a statement. He told Breitbart News in May.
